Hello Everyone,

Quote - “I do not love the bright sword for it's sharpness, nor the arrow for it's swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend” -- J.R.R. Tolkien

Wow! Can you believe that we are already more than halfway through the year? Before you know it, it will be Christmas time, can you say Whoa!

Do not forget to visit the Sacramento Kenpo Karate web-site to check out the new calendar feature.  It'll tell you when classes are and when any special events occur.  The 4th of July is coming up fast folks. I would like to extend our thanks to all of our students for showing the dedication and perseverance.

Our children’s class has gotten smaller as of late. S.K.K. would like to welcome Jon and Jonathan both are showing tremendous enthusiasm in our children’s class. Alyssa is moving along really well, she is one of the best students we have.Omari has been showing great promise and leadership abilities.

A reminder to all of the parents and all the adults, we have been directed by Cordova Parks and Recreation to make sure that the monthly tuition is paid for by the 10th of every month.

Thank you to all those wonderful parents who have also made the commitment to make sure their child/children show up neat, clean and ready to go for 6:30 pm class. We like to see clean gis and clipped fingernails.

The adult class has been a blast lately. Please take your time out to introduce yourself to Shannon and Jason, both are starting out fresh, although Jason has a brown belt in another style.  Gary works with Shannon and Jason is a good friend of Aron's. We would also like to introduce Erick, a first degree brown under Arnie Inouye from a long time ago.  We are glad to see Thomas's triumphant return and look forward to having both Eugene and Robert come back.  "Robert, Robert! -- Where ARE you??"

Welcome to all of the new people who have started up and thank you, it is and will be an honor and a pleasure to work with you all.

Tara is coming back from vacation in Alaska. Amy and Ron will be going on vacation from July 11th to July 26th. We already have Bryan, Erick, Thomas, and Gary lined up to help Tara with the children’s class. If any other adult students are available, I encourage you to come earlier and help teach in the children’s class.  Teaching is the best way to improve your knowledge and understanding of the art.  Thank you to those who decide to help out.

Have a happy, safe, and sane Fourth of July.

Dr. Dave's Seminar in May 2009

The group shot from Dr. Dave's seminar.  More to come.  :)

Thursday, May 21, 2009

Greetings and Salutations,

Boy-o-boy! Time flies when good times and fun abound at SKK. Especially, since we now have a thriving kids class and a kick-butt adult class.

Congratulations and praise to Bryan Parker, on Tuesday May 19, 2009 he was promoted to second degree brown. You should have seen the surprise on his face. He deserves it because of his dedication in showing up and working hard, especially the stuff that needs work. (And still does heheheh). More to come, so be ready pal…

On May 13th we at SKK were again blessed and honored to have Dr. Dave Crouch, 5th Degree American Kenpo practitioner and instructor give us a 2+ hour seminar. We were exposed to some very eye opening concepts in the world of American Kenpo techniques. So all of us at SKK as well as our other guests that showed up, we would like to extend our thanks to you Dr. Dave for taking time out of your busy schedule and coming out to show us what moving in Kenpo should really be.

A quick list of what is happening with our awesome dragons and tigers students:

Jadon is nearly ready for 4th stripe for all techniques and working on polishing them up now. Yayyy!!! Jadon, way to hang in there.

Travis is moving through Orange Dragon quickly and only needs his sparring stripe and basics stripe. Keep up the good work on everything you are working on.

Congratulations! Omari for being promoted to Jr. Dragon Yellow belt on April 9, 2009. He is currently working towards his 1st stripe on Orange Dragon.

Congratulations to JD for being promoted to Jr. Dragon Yellow belt. He is currently working for his first stripe. JD will be taking a break from us after this month.

Congratulations! Carlos for being promoted to Jr. Dragon Yellow belt on April 9, 2009. He is currently working towards his 2nd stripe now. Keep up the hard work Carlos.

Ruby now has a stripe for 1st three techniques and has just earned another stripe for reciting the Kenpo Creed.

Both Carlos and Ruby will be spending the rest of the month of May with us, and then they are taking a break for summer vacation.

So if anyone of boys and girls get a chance make sure to let Carlos, Ruby and JD how much we will miss them. Okay…

Alyssa just earned her 4th stripe for Personal Safety information. Alyssa, you have two more to go before Purple Tiger test. Keep up the good work especially in sparring. You are the most motivated one there.

Joseph is working towards his second stripe on white belt and has his 1st stripe for first 3 techniques.

Kudos to Jordan he got his last stripe on his belt and is eligible to test for Yellow Tiger soon.

Victor is working towards his 1st stripe on Yellow Dragon.

Akoni has recently earned 2nd stripe for Blocking Set #1 and already has a stripe for 1st three techs. Keep up the amazing work and we are impressed with how well you listen.

Joe'Vaughn Did you guys give him a stripe?? If not, he should earn one soon- he's working towards his first according to his card.

Hurray for Marilyn you are very good listener and you are showing very good martial skills. You are on your way to earning your first stripe.

Sierra- Has two stripes- Safety Info/Pledge and Blocking Set #1. According to her card, she knows the first 3 techs so should be working towards that stripe.

Mackenzie will soon be earning second stripe for either Safety Info/Pledge or Blocking Set #1. She has one other stripe for her first 3 techniques.

Atta-boy Darian you are very sharp and a good listener and I are impressed with your skills, keep up the work. You have definitely earned a stripe young man.

I would like everyone to say hi to Jon Stewart our newest student. He is working towards his first stripe. Keep up the enthusiasm Jon.

Our adult class has now been graced with Lisa and Gary, a couple more Kenpo orphans. So if you have not already introduced yourself please do. We are also fortunate to have Richard Nakamoto, a 4th Degree, show up and give his technical expertise.

Wish Amy and Ron good-luck as they head out to Graham Lelliott’s Fresno Camp this Memorial Day holiday.

Keep your eyes and ears open for upcoming events and seminars. We will keep you posted, as information becomes available.

For those of you who have taken a short hiatus we want you to know that your presence is missed and that you are more than welcome to come back through our doors so that good times can be had in the world of Kenpo Karate

See you soon…

April Kenpo News

APRIL SKK NEWS

Hello all,

Can you say, KABOOM! Wow! Our children’s class has grown now to twenty plus children. Needless to say the children’s class is really taking off. We have seen some rising new stars. We have seen some wonderful, bright, shiny personalities blossom during the past few weeks. It is truly a blessing to be able to teach such wonderful children. J.D. and his buddy Carlos are doing really well especially with helping their instructors and managing the smaller children. Omari is becoming a very solid young man and it is always a thrill to watch him work. Travis is moving along learning Kicking Set 1. Sierra is growing more confident by the class, soon her little sister will be joining us. Alyssa is a little dynamo and always impressing us.

To the parents out there we would like to extend our thanks. Without your help we would not have the children class that we now have. Thank you for working out with them and making sure they are getting their curriculum.

In our adult class, we are still working on the BAM! and WHAP! Of the orange belt techniques. For those of you who have been unable to attend and get the new better upgraded material do not worry. We are always working on our techniques. Of course, everyone will always be working on those forms and sets.

Chris and Robert have come back from a long hiatus. Johnny is currently finished with night school and has also come back. We are happy to introduce Gary into our family of orphaned kenpoists, so if you get a chance go and introduce yourself. Alicia and Rashelle have each earned a stripe for getting their yellow belt techniques.

It has come to our attention that we are not sparring enough, if at all. So in the near future if you have sparring gear do not hesitate to put them into your gear bag. We will start to have sparring sessions in the near future. Can’t wait, should be a blast, to do some sparring. It is really fun and talk about an aerobic workout, Whew! Bring out the oxygen! Hahaha…

Adult students! Especially upper belt, we need your help! On Thursday April 23rd Instructor Tara will be alone in teaching the enormous and always entertaining children class. If you could be so kind and let us (Amy, Tara, and Ron) know if you can come and help teach the children, that would be most appreciated.

For those that are interested, there is a tournament on April 11th, 2009 the Capital City Classic at Inderkum High School 2500 New Market drive, Sacramento, for more information visit http://www.gska.net/.

Several seminars and camps are on the horizon so keep your eyes and ears and most importantly your schedules open for dates and times.

March Kenpo News

Hi All,

A few things going on at our school.  First of all, we have at on of new kids joining our class and they're doing a great job.  We love teaching the kids.  It's great to see some come out of their shells, like Sierra, and others start to get greater leadership abilities, like Amari.

In the adult class, we've been working on increasing the effectiveness of our orange belt techniques, specifically, that I've been working on with my instructor.

Ron has been a great asset to the school and we always enjoy when his brother Rich (a fourth degree black belt) is able to attend as well.  Aron also is able to come at least once a week and he has a wonderful perspective (and really long legs.)

Michael has joined us and Greg, recently promoted to yellow belt,  has continued and both are a lot of fun to have in class.  Chad and his brother Kirk have made it to yellow and are working hard on their kenpo.

We have two new students, Alicia and Rachelle, who just got their uniforms and are doing great.  It's nice to have some female students back in class.

Bryan is doing a great job on his twist stances and we look forward to promoting him to second brown in the near future.

We also look forward to having Eugene come back to class, once work allows for it, as well as having Robert re-join us when his wrist heals.  (We didn't do it!)

I had another great lesson with Dave Crouch, my instructor, and we look forward to having him come up our way again in the near future.  I always learn a ton from Dr. Dave.

Ron and I plan to attend the Wonder Valley Camp in May, hosted by Graham Lelliott.  It's going to be a fabulous kenpo weekend. (www.glkenpo.com)

Oh, and Lee Wedlake has a new book out called 'Lessons with Ed Parker.'  It's available through www.leewedlake.com.  Great book!

Ron Nakamoto is joining Sacramento Kenpo Karate!

Ron Nakamoto is joining Sacramento Kenpo Karate!

We have some big and wonderful news!

Ron Nakamoto has agreed to come to Sacramento Kenpo Karate full time! He is bringing his student, Thomas, and later Thomas' daughter, Nicole, with us as well. With that, we'll be getting Johny back with us, even if only part-time.

Ron will be coming with us to train Tues and Thurs for the regular class and Wed for the advanced class.

As a general announcement, I will not be attending Wed. night workouts for the month of December. If the rest of you would like to get together at Mather on those Wednesdays, you are more than welcome to, but Ron and I need a little break.

We've been looking forward to having Aron come back. He's been out for a little bit and class isn't the same without him.

We've also enjoyed having Kevin Bates come to class and share his knowledge and good nature with us.

We would like to Welcome Ron and his students with great enthusiasm. He is a wealth of information and is an all around good guy. We're delighted to have him join us.

Seminar with Mr. John Sepulveda

Yesterday, Ron, Eugene and I went to see John Sepulveda in Elk Grove at Sher Khan karate.

As always, it was a pleasure to see him. I first met him when I was about 12.
He was very good friends with my first instructor.

At any rate, he went over a variety of techniques with the extensions and did some double stick work.

I know Eugene had a good time, as did Ron.

It's always great to work out with different martial artists and it's also a good check to see where we need to improve and where we can smile secretly to ourselves knowing that we did a good job.

While we all recognize that doing kenpo is for ourselves and that we shouldn't compare our skills to others, it's hard not to. :)

It's also a great learning experience to work with people who've had different instruction and have different ways of moving. Anyway, it's was a great time had by all.

We all appreciate Chris Tanaka for the invitation and will gladly return anytime Mr. Sepulveda is in town.

I was glad to see him getting around so well after his back injury almost a year ago.

Next week is Mr. Lee Wedlake. :)
