A Great Place to Learn Kenpo - Kenpo Orphans Welcome!

Sacramento Kenpo Karate is a very warm and friendly school teaching the art of self-defense. It's a great place for women to feel safe and for men to smack the heck out of each other, if that's what they want. The men can feel safe too. :)

Changes at Sacramento Kenpo Karate

For those who have visited Sacramento Kenpo Karate in the last year, this won't be news, but Renee Neal has taken over Tues and Thurs nights at Sacramento Kenpo Karate at Mather.

She welcomes kenpo orphans in the same way that I did so feel free to just drop in.

Ron Nakamoto is no longer any part of SKK.

In the DOJO

Children class is moving along pretty steady.  We have a great bunch of kids.  I really appreciate their patience and hard work.  I realize they are all trying very hard to get stripes and promoted.  Speaking of stripes, remember, we are allowing only one stripe a week.  I am thinking of adding a stripe for learning how to tie your own belt; no more blaming the parents.

Adult class is becoming very colorful.  We miss that.  All colors except yellow are currently being represented.  Remember to show up at 7:15 to get your warm-up in before class begins.  If you know anyone whether, a beginner or an 'orphan' feel free to bring them by so they can experience a friendly atmosphere and still learn how to 'move the meat bag'.  We would love to have more adults in class.  So get the word out.  To all of the adults who are helping to teach, we would like to say Thank You!!!  See you at the gym…

In the SKK Dojo –
Well, our children class is moving along pretty good. I believe everyone is having an excellent time. Please, check out the You tube videos that we have recently uploaded. The videos have Ms. Long and I going over the techniques for the lower belts. I need to mention that although, it is very chaotic at times in class, I appreciate the students patience. I also want to mention, that the more the children practice and pay attention in class, the sooner they are to get promoted. I will try and get to everyone throughout the month and apologize ahead of time if I do not.
Some of our new adults are almost ready for promotion. I would like to re-iterate that we want you to work on your intent / certainty. We are looking for your techniques to have some energy and power. Of course, we also want you to exercise control. Otherwise, keep up the excellent work. You are all awesome students and we love what you bring and do for the class.

Our adult class is moving along quite well.  We have an excellent group of students and it is always a pleasure to be working with you guys and gals.  For those who are teaching, keep up the good work and thank you.  Always, work on the “intent” of the technique, as well as, the attacker.  OSSS!!!

TECHNIQUES IN THE AIR – (Ed Parker's Encyclopedia of Kenpo, pg. 122)

Refers to practicing self-defense techniques without a partner.  Training in this manner requires visualizing an imaginary opponents attacking you, and then applying defensive and offensive moves in answer to his attack.  Executing techniques properly in empty space (in the air) requires imagination and a great deal of practice.  You must be focused on the point where each move of your composed sequence is to be placed, in addition to anticipating your opponent's reaction stemming from these moves.  This in no way refers to AIR-BORNE Techniques.

SALUTATION – (Ed Parker's Encyclopedia of Kenpo, pg. 106)

A series of moves and/or gestures in Kenpo to indicate respect to one you are greeting or competing against at a tournament.

BASICS – (Ed Parker's Encyclopedia of Kenpo, pg. 17)

Simplified moves that comprise the fundamentals of Kenpo.  They are divided into stances, maneuvers, blocks, strikes, punches, kicks, finger techniques, parries, specialized moves and methods.

There are only a set number of basic moves –else are variations of the same.  (The Zen of Kenpo, pg 8)

Wasted inches are wasted time.  (The Zen of Kenpo, pg 120)

In the SKK Dojo –

The children class is moving along pretty steady.  All of our boys and girls are doing an excellent job at being the best students they can be.  Parents, please make sure your student/s ready to go before class starts.  We are averaging about 16 to 20 students a night and I really appreciate everyone's patience when it comes to us teaching your child/children.  I am trying my best to make sure everyone is learning something and in a timely manner.

Our adult class is averaging one new student monthly.  It sure is nice to see our class have the full spectrum of colored belts, makes teaching all the more interesting.   As always, thank you to those who help teach both the children class and the adult. This month we are going to have upper belt testing and it will be well deserved and well earned.  Good luck to those involved in this process.
